Every year, Mars Hill Students wraps up with the Volunteer Appreciation Night (the VAN), a chance for everyone who has given their time, love, and energy to the ministry to celebrate and be celebrated.

In other words…

It’s such a fun chance for all the student ministry leaders to come together after another year of working with some of the best teenagers out there.  The people in my freshman “family” are fantastic!  I was sad that not everyone was able to make it out for the event, but loved the chance to hang out with a few of the friends I’ve made throughout the year, like Ashley and Hannah.

Perhaps one of the biggest blessings of this year has been reconnecting with Doug and Kristi, who were the freshman family leaders.  Doug was the youth pastor of the church I went to in middle/high school, at least for the first couple years I was a part of the program.  He and Kristi (his wife) had such an impact on me, going as far to say as they are big reason why I became a Christian when I did.  When they felt like it was time to move on from that church, I was crushed.

Life always comes full circle, though, and when we came together for the first training session at the end of last summer, I was over the moon ecstatic to learn they were back in my life.

One of the most humbling parts of the VAN is the chance to be reminded that what we do is truly valued by our family leaders…

…and the pastors of Mars Hill Students (who also deserve a big thanks for all they do to make the ministries what they are.  Troy, Matt, Jim, and Corrie…you are amazing at what you do!)…

…but most of all, by the students.

Sometimes, it’s hard and draining to be involved in this ministry.  Sometimes, it’s fun and energizing.  And sometimes, it’s nice to be reminded people notice.

I love it and my girls from the bottom of my heart.  I feel so honored to have such an important role in their lives.  I feel so blessed to have the chance to lead the girls that I do.  They are wonderful, kind hearted, funny, and smart.  They inspire and challenge me every day to be a better person, to continue to seek a deeper relationship with Jesus, and to own the person I have become.

Here’s to another great year!
