time to refocus.

First, thanks from the bottom of my heart to everyone who commented, tweeted, texted, etc. their well-wishes and congratulations this weekend.  The love and support I was shown definitely helped carry me through and keep me excited for future races!  I am a lucky girl.

It was a great weekend in DC, but it definitely made Monday come fast, despite having Friday off!  The bright side of this particular Monday is that it marks Oberon release day!  It’s one of the brews from Bell’s Brewery based out of Kalamazoo, MI and today is the first day it’s out for the season!  It is the epitome of summer!  If you’ve never had it, definitely check out their beer finder to see if they sell it where you are.  If they do, go find some!

Anyhow, now that the National Half Marathon is a thing of the past (sad face!), I’m ready to look to the future.  There are two big areas I’m thinking about:  future race training and weight loss.

But a quick talk about today’s food thus far!

Breakfast was a Kashi mix – I really love the combination of the two flavors, but it makes the two boxes seem never ending!  I suppose I haven’t been eating it that frequently.

Not long after getting to work, I had a couple homemade chocolate chip cookies.

I was really glad I only ate half of my pasta last night because it made lunch super easy to get ready this morning!  I love being able to just grab something and walk out the door.  I finished off the herbed pappardelle and it was not quite as good as it was last night, but still really enjoyable.

rest, recover, and future training.

After hurting it during the race on Saturday, my knee is still pretty sore.  It’s definitely not as bad as it was, but by far not completely better either.  That being said, this week, my exercise is going to focus less on running.  I might try a shorter run or two later in the week, but I’m playing it all by ear.  While I’ve got a bit of down time from running, I plan on doing a bit more strength training.

The true order of business this week is fine tuning my training plan for the next couple of months.  I have three races in May:  two 10ks and a 25k.

As of now, this is what I’ve got planned out:

Some of the things I want/plan to do differently this training cycle:

  • Incorporate hill training and speed work.  The hill training will be particularly important as there are about 3.0 miles of rolling hills on the 25k course.  I want to feel more prepared for the this year.
  • Actually do the yoga I have planned (at least once a week, hopefully twice).  This was on my training plan every week leading up to the half marathon and I think I practiced about 5 or 6 times over the course of 4 months.
  • Do more strength training.  I did this a bit sporadically leading up to the half, but I know that it’s so important.  One area I hope to focus on is my core; second priority is upper body/arms.

Mileage-wise, I feel like I’m sitting pretty for this training cycle, but I completely believe that incorporating the aforementioned aspects will make such a difference not just in my races, but in my running abilities as a whole!

weight loss.

It’s been awhile since I’ve written about my weight loss progress, primarily because it hasn’t really been my top focus as of late.  I’ve definitely not been focusing on this like I should.

I got on the scale this morning and was a bit disappointed.  But, I don’t know that weighing myself right after a weekend of travel, a half marathon, and a big/heavy meal last night was really in my favor.

last weigh in: 156.6 | this week: 163.0 | change: +6.4 | overall: -70.0

Ouch.

Here’s the thing though.  I know what I need to do, I just haven’t been doing it.

Rather than taking the 30.0 pounds I have left to reach my goal, I’m going to focus on 5.0 pound increments.  It seems much more manageable to look at those smaller amounts as compared to one lump sum, if you will.

To have a fun way to mark off the pounds, I made up some sheets to mark off the pounds as they go down on the scale.

I’m really hopeful that this time around I can lose the weight I want and keep it off!  First 5.0 pounds, I’ve got my eye on you!

I love the idea of focusing on 5.0 pound increments at a time. I also have about 30 pounds left to lose and have been having the same problem: knowing what to do but not doing it. I’m going to take a cue from you and focus on smaller increments.

Congrats on the race this weekend 🙂 I loved following you through the training and race recaps!

So excited for you and your races! I think hill training will make a HUGE difference for you. I rarely trained on hills until I got to Ann Arbor and after running this city for a while, the DC hills felt really easy! I was sad we didn’t meet up this weekend but the big blogger crowds kind of scared me off. The May of Races will be super fun though!

and again, congrats on the great half!

I totally understand what it’s like to get off track with the weight loss and have it not be a top priority. It’s so hard to get back into the “weight loss mode” after staying on maintenance for so long! Good luck 🙂

Good luck on the weight loss! I have been struggling with it for so long but finally feel like I’m on the right track and can stick with what I’ve been doing. I hope your knee gets better too.

It was great to meet you Saturday 🙂

That’s a great idea – where are you going to hang those? I’m trying to lose about 10 lbs for my upcoming wedding and…um…let’s just say it has NOT been going well and I could use all the help I can get!

I think on the inside of my closet door…I thought about the bathroom, right by the scale, but with two roommates it didn’t seem like the right option…especially not when one of the girls has a boyfriend who uses the bathroom on occasion!
