the one where the vegetarian ate chicken.

Tonight was the first night back for Anthem, the church youth group I volunteer with.  We had the first leader’s training session, so the students weren’t actually around yet.  I was excited to see friends I haven’t seen all summer, meet my new co-leader, but also because they were giving us dinner and it’s almost always Thai food.  YUM!  Bring. It. On.

The staff at the church is always really, really great about being respectful of people’s dietary needs, including vegetarian, so I knew I didn’t need to worry.

I had some gang garee (potatoes, coconut milk, and yellow curry), rice, and Pad Thai with veggies.

I’m eating away, minding my own business when I realize there is chicken in my (what was supposed to be) vegetarian friendly Pad Thai!  Do you see the chicken in there?  Because I didn’t!

I was really upset about it because I very intentionally avoided the tray that was Pad Thai with chicken (duh) and went for the tray that I knew I could eat from.

Here’s the thing though.  I feel like I’m being completely overdramatic about it because it was only a couple small pieces.  Yet, at the same time, if I wanted to have chicken in my dish, I wouldn’t be a vegetarian!  I have a lot of reasons for not eating meat and I hate when it finds its way onto my plate.

I know it happens and in all likelihood, it might not even be the first time and I just hadn’t noticed it before.  It can get tough in restaurants with things like chicken broth getting added to dishes.  I realized it and moved on (okay, after I finish writing this, then I’m moving on) with my life.  I did feel queasy, but I think there was such a small amount that it was really more psychological than an actual physical reaction.

I gave the person who coordinated the food a heads up since we go through that restaurant a lot to cater and thought/hoped she might want to let them know what happened.  I know there was nothing she could do about it at that moment, but it made me feel a little better.  Ranting officially over.

Do you think it was justified for this to bother me?

Oh my goodness I would have lost my mind. YUCK! I think I would have been just like you — initially disgusted, perturbed, and then trying to move on. Also, I think you did the right thing in saying something to someone — you want to save other veg*ns from the same fate, you know? You might want to also say something to the restaurant? But IDK — obviously that’s your call. Sorry you had a yuck encounter. 🙁

I think you were completely justified! Restaurants take issues like allergies seriously, and they should do the same for other dietary concerns. If they want your (and your church group’s) continued service, they should respect your vegetarianism.
