taylor swift speak now tour.

in Grand Rapids

Last night, Taylor Swift brought her Speak Now World Tour through Grand Rapids to play at the Van Andel Arena.  This marks the 5th time I’ve seen T.Swizzle in concert (once as an opening act for Keith Urban, the others she was the headliner) and she gets a little stronger as a performer during each tour.

I, of course, had to take advantage of every opportunity I could to take cheesy, gratuitous photos “with” Taylor.

Okay, really just twice, but probably two too many for a 27 year old woman at a Taylor Swift concert.  Whatevs.

She had two opening acts for the night:  Hunter Hayes and NeedToBreathe.  I was completely unfamiliar with Hunter, who we’ll say could be the Justin Bieber of country music.  Solid voice, huge appeal to the teen girl population.

I really like NeedToBreathe, so I was excited for them!  They’re a Christian rock band, so not quite the typical sound for a country show, but they held their own!

I was ridiculously excited for Taylor!  I will be the first to admit that she’s not the strongest singer out there, but she writes catchy, relatable songs and she is an amazing performer.  There’s a reason she’s winning awards like Entertainer of the Year at the country awards shows:  she puts on one of the most spectacular stage performances I have ever seen.

I read an article before the tour started where she talked about how she was really inspired by Broadway and wanted that theatricality to shape the tour.  Check out the elaborate stage!

Taylor talked about how often she’s been to Grand Rapids and she felt comfortable enough to call us by a nickname (GR).  She’s played here several times now and easily sells out our 12,000 seat arena.  For this tour, tickets were gone in less than ten minutes.  I’ve been quite spoiled with seats right up front at a lot of concerts, but this time around I was glad to just get a ticket at all!

The other times I’ve seen Taylor, much like tonight, she played guitar and piano.

This time, she mixed it up and played the banjo and ukelele as well!  Multi-talented, this girl.

She sang a few songs at the back of the arena, making her way through the crowd to get to the smaller stage.  I don’t envy her body guard or the venue security during that trek.  Fans go nuts, but it’s so evident she loves getting right in the middle of everyone.

She had a great set list, playing a good mix of songs from her new album while not forgetting the songs that got her to where she is today.  Oh, and honoring some of the great music that has come out of Michigan.  Taylor singing Eminem?  Epic.

  • Sparks Fly
  • Mine
  • The Story of Us
  • Our Song
  • Mean
  • Back to December (mash-up at the end with You’re Not Sorry and Apologize by One Republic)
  • Better Than Revenge
  • Speak Now
  • Fearless
  • Last Kiss
  • Covers:  Lose Yourself by Eminem and Smile by Uncle Kracker (my video!)
  • You Belong With Me
  • Dear John
  • Enchanted
  • Haunted
  • Long Live

  • Love Song

It was such a fun night and so evident that Taylor is not only having a great time, but so appreciative of all her fans.

Taylor, thanks for another great concert!  I’m already so excited for the next one!
