starting from scratch.

I have been in a workout rut and I think a large part of it is due to the fact that I stopped planning my workouts.  For weeks now, I’ve been in a “wing it” mode and rather than going into a workout with a plan of action, I’ve gone in and done whatever would strike my fancy at the moment.

Clearly, that doesn’t work for me.

So, I’m going back to planning my workouts and posting my weekly workout recaps on Sundays with a look back at the week and the plan for the week ahead.  I haven’t done a recap since the end of July!  Having that accountability seems to help.

I also started from scratch and made a brand spanking new workout log.  I hated looking at all the white space on the days where going home right after work seemed like the better option.  The drab colors did nothing to get me excited to open up that file.  I needed something new, so I started back at square one.  Since I’m not training for a race right now, I’m just going to focus on planning my workouts for the week ahead.  Once I get back into race training mode, I’ll have a more active plan looking at several upcoming weeks, at least where running is concerned.

Speaking of running, tonight is my first run in six weeks!  I’ve been taking the time to let me knee rest and heal with a self-prescribed break from the constant pressure and pounding of running.

I’m excited to run, but nervous about how my knee will hold up.  I’m planning on two miles, but I’m going to play it by ear.  If I have to stop at one mile (or even half of one!), it’s a slow but sure start.

In my new plan, I will incorporate at least two strength training sessions; generally one with actual weights and one yoga.  For the time being, I’m going to limit my running to three days a week at most to see how my knee can handle it.  I really came to like the challenge the bike gave me, so that will be at least once a week.

All that being said, it’s ironic that my first two days of this new plan ended up being rest days – I was sick on Sunday and had an even to attend last night.  So, tonight I start from scratch.

I’m anxious to feel rejuvenated, to have a plan for when I get to the gym, to not wander aimlessly.

How do you get back into a workout groove when you loose motivation?

Nice new workout log!

I’m scared to death about what taking time off after the marathon is going to do to me – mentally and physically. I’m already looking at Halloween races, even though 2 weeks might not be enough recovery time.

I think this is great! Definitely love the log 🙂

For me, sometimes I absolutely HAVE to take a few days, maybe a week or so off of working out and realize what I truly love, crave and want in my workouts 🙂 Then I get back in the swing with a new motivation and confidence!

*Sigh* I totally need to do the same thing. It’s pretty sad that aside from walks with my 3 year old, I haven’t exercised in months.
