soul surfer.

I’ve had my niece Sarah with me for the evening.  She was cashing in her Christmas gift of dinner and a movie of her choice.  I took her brother Jacob out for his present in January when we saw TRON: Legacy.  The oldest, Katie, still hasn’t decided which movie she wants to go see.

It’s been a really fun day thus far!  At the movie theater, we shared some popcorn (because movie theater popcorn is the best kind of popcorn, well, except the Chicago mix from Garrett’s Popcorn Shop in Chicago.  Now that is truly the best).  We saw Soul Surfer, the movie based on the story of Bethany Hamilton, the surfer who lost her arm from a shark bite when she was 13.  I knew the part of Bethany’s story about the shark attack, but her recovery and comeback was amazing.

It was by far one of the most inspirational stories I’ve ever heard and the movie was absolutely engaging.  AnnaSophia Robb played the role of Bethany and other key cast members included Helen Hunt, Dennis Quaid, and Carrie Underwood (!!!).  AnnaSophia was fantastic in her role, convincingly conveying the ups and downs of Bethany’s roller coaster journey.  I was highly impressed with how realistic the special effects were in making it appear she really had lost an arm.  I would highly recommend checking it out – very much worth seeing.  Just bring some tissues.

Sarah’s restaurant of choice for dinner was Panera Bread, but first we stopped for a sweet treat:  mini cupcakes!

At Panera, I did the You Pick Two combo with a bowl of creamy tomato soup and half the Mediterranean veggie sandwich.   This was actually the first time I’ve ever had tomato soup!

They initially forgot to give me my soup, so they ended up bringing me a free chocolate chip cookie to say sorry.  It was completely not necessary, but so kind.  Sarah and I split it!

Time to go spend some time with Sarah – and do some reading on Bethany Hamilton who I’m now completely fascinated by!
