Since I was sans camera yesterday, I decided to forgo the foodie pictures and just enjoy a meal out with a friend I haven’t seen much lately rather than trying to use my phone to take sub-par pictures.  If you’re curious, I had a veggie sushi roll and a martini to start.

To top things off, I had a cookie skillet for dessert:  a couple warm, gooey chocolate chip cookies with ice cream, whipped cream, maraschino cherries, and chocolate sauce.  Perhaps not the thing I needed after having two pączek earlier in the day.  But, I wanted to enjoy my last chance at sweets for awhile.

For Lent this year, I’m giving up sweets (candy, cake, cookies, pie, etc.).

I never used to give anything up for Lent.  Since I’m not Catholic, where it’s most commonly observed, I didn’t grow up practicing Lenten traditions.  In college I started attending the church I still attend where they do focus on this season of sacrifice.

The first year I gave something up, it was chocolate and I failed miserably.  About 2 days in, without thinking of it, I had a Fiber One Oats and Chocolate bar.  It was all downhill from there.

Two years ago, I gave up Facebook with great success.  Last year, Facebook and Twitter.  This year, I needed a different challenge.

Sweets. It was that one thing my mind continually came back to.

I have a definite sweet tooth and this is going to be a seriously tough 40 days.  I know there are going to be a lot of temptations – birthday celebrations, a big event at work next week (remember the cupcake tasting we had not too long ago?  It was for this upcoming event), and a wedding…just to name a couple biggies.  Not to mention, the random cookies that get brought into the office, the fact that I neglected to get a Shamrock Shake and now won’t be able to this year (tragic!), and the candy jar that sits on my desk.

Here’s the thing though…if it were something easy to give up, it would kind of defeat the whole purpose of the season, don’t you think?

I don’t like necessarily just cutting something out of my life, but also making a conscious effort to add something as well.  Thus, while my sweet tooth will be deprived for the next 40 days, my journal will get lots of TLC.  I am planning to journal every day from now until Easter.  Not necessarily page after page every day.  Sometimes, it might just be a sentence or two.  But, the point is to write and reflect in a deeper, more personal way that blogging doesn’t necessarily allow.

ash wednesday.

Since it is Ash Wednesday, I was up wicked early (5:00 am) to head to church.  Yep, I’ve got ashes on my forehead.  Perhaps I can get a dollar for every time today that someone tells me I have something on my face.  If the past couple years have been any indication, I could make a decent amount!

I was out of the house by 6:10 am – before my alarm would go off on a normal day!  I threw together overnight oats in a jar last night knowing that I would not be awake enough to prepare anything this morning.  My jar had 1/3 cup each of vanilla Chobani, almond milk, and rolled oats, plus 2 tbsp cacao nibs and the remnants of the jar of peanut butter.

Perhaps not the greatest choice to eat while driving, but it was definitely a delicious start to the morning!!

Are you giving anything up for Lent?
