Everyone has their vices and Jen Lancaster’s is reality television.

My Fair Lazy: One Reality Television Addict’s Attempt to Discover if Not Being A Dumb Ass is the New Black; Or A Culture-Up Manifesto was last year’s release from Lancaster who has written a few memoir type books, including Bitter is the New Black.

I’ve read one or two of Lancaster’s books before and saw this one in a post from Heather not too long ago.  I immediately wanted to read it!  In My Fair Lazy, Lancaster shares her story of how she met Candace Bushnell, author of Sex and the City, one of her literary idols and admittedly embarrassed herself with a lack of culture.

This interaction set Lancaster on a “Jenaissance” to improve her knowledge and experience with all things cultural:  theater, poetry, opera, and even ethnic cuisines.    Throughout the book, Lancaster shares in her typical self-deprecating fashion, about her success and failures at trying to become a more cultured person.  Hilarity and awkward moments abound as Lancaster shares her experiences.

Critics of the book argue that she’s very self-focused and simplistic, but I would counter that by saying that she is just being real.  I love Lancaster’s writing style and appreciate that she’s someone I feel like I can relate to.  If I want to read a classic, I’ll pick up Dickens or Hemingway.  When I read her memoirs, I love that it feels like I’m having coffee with a girlfriend I haven’t seen in awhile.  She’s someone I can relate to, someone I could be friends with.

I appreciate Lancaster’s honesty and ability to laugh at herself.  More than anything, though, her tales inspired me to get some more culture in my own life.  It made me want to experience things like the opera, try some new foods, and learn about wine.  It made me ready for my own cultural renaissance!

It’s a fun and easy read, perfect as we roll into the summer months!
