Race Recap: Resolution Run

in Race Recap

I try to take away some lesson learned from each race I run.  Today’s lesson?  Running after you’ve had a migraine most of the day is not necessarily the greatest idea – even if it had mostly subsided by the time the race starts.  I ran the Resolution Run this afternoon, marking my second time running this race.  Last year I finished in 45:57 and my only goal for today was to beat that time.  I knew it would be tough, but I was determined!

I was quite surprised/pleased with my pace while I was running – many times I looked at my Garmin, I was under at 10 min/mile pace, which is an absolutely awesome pace for me!  If it hadn’t been for the walking breaks (and all the freaking hills!), I think I could have finished in under 40 minutes.  Alas, I did take walking breaks and didn’t finish quite that fast.  There’s always next year!

One thing that has been awesome about the two years I’ve run this race is the weather:  mid-40s with no snow (although last year, there was a cold, drizzly rain by the end).  On December 31 in Michigan, that’s the exception, not the rule.  I’ll take it for sure!

The first mile, I was feeling really great.  The hills weren’t too bad, I was rocking out to my run the world playlist and trying to enjoy myself, despite the headache.

Around mile 1.6, I took my first walking break and I kind of feel like it all went downhill from there.  The walking got more and more frequent the closer I got to the finish, the hills got a bit bigger, and my legs felt more and more like lead (along with super tight hamstrings).  I hadn’t worked out at all in over a week and I was battling a migraine.  I knew deep down I probably shouldn’t have been out there, but there I was anyhow, so I was going to do the best I could in light of the circumstances.

I did take walking breaks and finished in 44:18 (chip time; 11:04 pace).  My mile splits weren’t too shabby for the first couple of miles, then I definitely slowed down.  There were several more walking breaks in the second half.  In the last half, I just kept reminding myself, the faster I went, the faster I’d see the finish line.  Before I knew it, there it was!

  • Mile 1:  10:01 (yeah!!!)
  • Mile 2:  10:31 (yeah again!!!)
  • Mile 3:  11:44
  • Mile 4:  11:36
  • Mile .08:  0:43

Rounding the corner into the last little stretch, I came right into a cold, strong headwind which royally sucked.  I remember that same thing happening last year though, so I was somewhat expecting it.

So, I PRed for the distance which I was absolutely thrilled with.  Take that migraine, I’ll show you!

Great going Mindy! I’m particularly impressed because of the migraine. They usually make it hard for me to walk, let alone, run.

I definitely had a nice dose of Excedrin in me; had it not been the tail end of it, I know there’s no way I could have even considered it. Still, perhaps not my smartest move?
