Race the Sun

A couple weeks ago, an event called “Race the Sun” showed up on Facebook, hosted by Carpe Diem GR which is a November Project pledge group. I opted in as interested and would likely ignore the opportunity when the day arrived. You know, typical Facebook activity. But, when a friend registered, I thought why the heck not?

Race the Sun was a one mile untimed fun run, with runners starting in reverse order. Unlike most races, where the fastest runners lead the pack, it was the slower runners who started first. The goal was to finish the one mile course before the sunset at 9:09pm. The event was incredibly low-key, but with a good turnout for a Thursday night. I’m not sure how many people showed up, but at least fifty. The friend I planned on going with opted out at the last minute, but I’m glad I still went. I was pleasantly surprised to see another friend in attendance. Plus, I met a bunch of great new people and that’s always a bonus.

The event kicked off at 8:30pm with one of the event organizers giving instructions and directions for the route. We psyched ourselves up with a “bounce,” or jumping around and yelling. I have no doubt we looked ridiculous, but we were having fun. Before long, the first runners kicked us off.

Although it was a pretty humid night, Mother Nature cooperated in that we had a gorgeous sunset! The sky was nothing but stunning. Even better, I ran my fastest mile in ages, clocking at 9:58! I raced the sun and won! Based on my runs over the last few months, I signed up at a 10:30 finish. That felt within reach, but still challenging. So, a sub-10 minute mile felt absolutely monumental. In truth, I think I had an even faster time in me. But, I also wanted to finish strong and it felt like a fine balance. Regardless, it was a good boost in the midst of a season when running just feels hard.

After the event, a bunch of the group went to a local brewery for a late night happy hour. It was nice to connect with some new fitness-minded people and relax over a drink. Although it was a bit out of my comfort zone to attend an event like this alone, I’m glad I went! This night owl might even get really out of her comfort zone and attend a Wednesday morning workout with Carpe Diem GR one of these days. I make no promises because a 6:14am start is brutal. But, crazier things have happened.
