I’m a Personal Trainer!

in Personal Training

The title for this post says it all: I’m a personal trainer! Let’s go back to the beginning of the story, shall we? Last year, I called the National Academy of Sports Medicine and enrolled in their Certified Personal Trainer (CPT) program. It was something I’d considered for awhile and a post from Katy pushed me over the edge. I know I’m going to be a lifelong student, in one form or another, and this was just another way to further my education in an area I’m passionate about.

From the point I called NASM, I had six months to take the certification exam. In full disclosure, I didn’t pass the exam on my first attempt last fall. I’ve always been a really good student (think Rory Gilmore) and this was a hard reality for me. I have a lot of thoughts on what happened, but it was considerably harder than I anticipated and I mad the fatal mistake of going back to change a bunch of answers. It’s test taking 101 to never go back and change your answers.

At that point, I honestly wasn’t in a hurry to register for a retake. Not only would it be more money out of pocket, I didn’t want to worry about it over the holiday season. If I was going to try again, then I needed to be in the right head space. This spring, I was ready! I sat down for attempt number two over the weekend. While I was taking it, I trusted my gut instincts for each question. I answered and moved on to the next question.

As it is an electronic exam, I was fortunate enough to learn my results almost immediately. I just had to walk out of the testing room and wait for the proctor to pull up my results. It was a huge sigh of relief when I saw the word “pass” on the monitor!

I’ve had a lot of people ask me what’s next now that I have the certification. In all honestly, I’m not 100% sure. Just getting through the exam was my immediate focus (and after not passing the first time, my confidence was shaken!). I couldn’t let myself focus on the possibilities beyond the test. I know it will be an asset to my health coaching practice. I’m excited to start putting together workouts to share on social media. Although I’ve done some here and there over the years, I’ve always been a bit hesitant since I didn’t have the credentials. But, now I do! Now that the short-term goal of passing the test is behind me, I can start developing my vision for the next 6-12 months in this specific of my life.

I’m in the process of putting together a massive post about why I chose NASM over other programs, study tips, and more. If you have questions, leave a comment on this post and I’ll do my best to answer!
