Last month, I wrote a birthday post on Instagram and shared “I have no big, supposedly life-changing goals I want to achieve. Instead, I have hopes to simply be a better, more whole version of me. I want to live from a place of deeper joy and brighter hope, and to find gratitude in the mundane everyday. I want to do more of the things that light my soul on fire, and to act with more grace, love, and compassion. And, to live each day as if it were my last.”

At that point, just a month ago, I was finally able to recognize how exhausted I was carrying the grief from my grandma’s passing. I was exhausted on every possible level and just needed to step back from my overly ambitious Type A tendencies. I’m constantly registering for races and going after PRs, furthering my education in one way or another, and more and more and more. Deferring my entry for Chicago made me realize just how much I need to slow down. There is a time and a place for those big, audacious goals. I just don’t think that’s the season I’m in right now, and that’s okay.

But, I struggle because I do still want to continue to improve and grow as a person. While those broader aspirations for the year ahead are still priorities, I want to find some sense of balance. Maybe, more than anything, that’s what the year will be about. Balance has never been a strength. It may require some fine-tuning to figure out what that balance looks like in my life right now.

My most important priority right now is to get back into a fitness routine. I spent more time this summer sitting on my butt than I’d care to admit. I feel all-around better when I’m consistently active and I want to get back to that place. Plus, I know I’ll likely get the itch to race again in 2018 (because, let’s be honest) and want a really solid base for whatever distance I go after. So, this month’s goals are primarily fitness focused.

Run 8 times. I’m less concerned right now about how many miles I run than just getting out and running. I actually restarted Couch to 5k over the weekend in efforts to improve my pace.

Complete 8 BODYSHRED workouts. While the true design of the program calls for six days a week, I want to take advantage of the fall weather for running! Plus, I don’t love strength training and I know if follow the program as intended, I’ll get bored and quit. My goal with BODYSHRED this time is not to finish in the eight weeks, but just to finish. I am hopeful to complete the program by the end of 2017.

Take 4 yoga classes. I miss regular time on my mat. I need regular time on my mat! My practice brings me joy. It forces me to slow down enough to simply focus on my breath and letting my body flow.

Go for 4 bike rides. It was late summer before I dug my bike out of the garage. I forgot just how much I enjoy cycling! I want to get a few more rides in while the weather cooperates.

Watch at least one beach sunset. It’s one of those things that brings me joy and I don’t take advantage of the fact I live 45 minutes from Lake Michigan nearly often enough.

Finish A Storm of Swords and one other book. I fell out of the reading habit this year and I desperately want to get back into it. Granted the Game of Thrones series aren’t exactly quick and easy novels, but given the way I usually devour books, I shouldn’t still be on book three for a series I started in February or March.

Donate to charity. I was going through some old papers this weekend and realized just how much I used to donate. I want to get back into that habit and God knows with everything happening in our world right now, there are plenty of ways.

Lose weight. I would love to get into the 140s this month (5.6 pounds). I was able to maintain my weight over the summer, even losing a little, with almost no effort. Now that I’m getting back to better habits, I think this is doable.

Way to go on maintaining this summer! That is not an easy feat! And your goals for october sound great! I did not bike enough this summer, i hope to get out a bit before the snow starts! (sadly a real concern)

Snow, ugh. I’m never ready! (But, I’m also nerdishly excited that I can say “winter is coming” this year and actually get the reference.)
