national running day.

Happy National Running Day!

There’s a “holiday” I never, ever thought I’d be excited about!  It wasn’t more than a few years ago when I was a self-avowed hater of running.  I would see people going down the street for their run and couldn’t fathom why on earth they’d want to do that.

Then, one day, I got it in my head I wanted to do a 5k.  I have no idea where that desire came from, but once I thought of it, I couldn’t stop thinking about it.  On October 13, 2007, Michaeleen and I ran the Homecoming 5k at Grand Valley State University (go Lakers!) and I finished in 42:20.  And from there, it began.  Since then, I’ve shaved more than 10 minutes off my 5k time, run 12 more races including a half marathon, two 25ks, and in just a few days I start my official training for my very first marathon!

My, how times have changed; and I couldn’t be happier about it!

Breakfast this morning was a smoothie!  It’s been so warm the past couple days that the cold drink sounded fantastic!

When I was packing to move a few months back, I found a black sleeveless shirt that I loved and thought I lost ages ago!  Now that we’ve finally got some nice weather here in Michigan, I broke it out!  Between that and a delicious breakfast, it was a great morning!

When I was making dinner last night, I threw together some teriyaki stir-fry for a couple meals, one of them today’s lunch.  I saw it in the fridge while I was making my breakfast and made a mental note not to forget the container.  Then, I got halfway to work this morning and realized I did exactly that.  It’s still right where I saw it this morning.

I went through my options as lunch time approached and the usual standbys (Jimmy John’s, peanut butter sandwich, cereal) didn’t sound at all appetizing.  But, since it was a nice day, I decided to take a quick hike up to Bagel Beanery for an avo-veggie bagelwich (tomato basil bagel with veggie cream cheese, Swiss cheese, lettuce, tomato, and guacamole).  They had me at guacamole.  It was the first time I’d gotten more than just a bagel and cream cheese, and I was really happy with it!

Plus, some fresh air and sunshine did me a world of good!

How are you celebrating National Running Day?

I wish I had that restaurant in my area – the sandwich sounds amazing! Bagels + ‘cado are two of my favorite foods, so anything that puts them together sounds like a winner.

I’m celebrating with a two mile run. I’m just starting to get back into running, so it seems like a much bigger deal to me than it really is, but I’m excited!

I just found your blog! I celebrated by doing a 4mi hill workout and some lower body weights. This week is week 1 of marathon #3 training

Hi Michelle! Marathon #3 – very cool! I hope I can say that someday – first, I just need to get through #1!
