marathon training numero uno.

Summer has finally arrived – and seems to be sticking around for awhile!! – here in Michigan!  We had such a long stretch of a couple hot days, then it’d get cold again.  The forecast is calling for temperatures in the 80s most of the week and I could not be more excited!

I ended up getting a bit more sun that I thought at Jacqueline and Scott’s engagement party yesterday.  My shoulders were pretty pink by the time I went to bed, but thanks to lots of lotion, they’re looking nice and tan today!  I know they’ll eventually peel, but tan looks better than lobster!

I skipped church this morning and opted for a quiet morning around the house.  I lounged in bed for a bit, then made some coffee and curled up on the sunporch with a book for awhile.  Breakfast was Kashi GoLean! Crunch with chia seeds and blackberries!  Yum!

After awhile, I changed into workout gear and headed to the Y for my first official workout of marathon training!!  I really wanted to do an outdoor run, but I didn’t know how my knee was going to hold up, so I opted for the treadmill instead so I could stop when I needed to and not have to worry about walking back anywhere.  With all the problems I’ve had lately, I know I need to be extra cautious about taking it slow and listening to my body for awhile.

I had 4.0 miles planned, but I got to 2.0 miles (22:57, 11:28 pace) and knew it was time to stop.  I switched over to the elliptical for another 1.5 miles (17:50) before I had to call it quits.  This training cycle is going to be challenging in that I know I can’t do as much as I’d like, but I’d rather take it slow and avoid a major injury!

I ended my time with a small core/weights workout.  I used a pair of 8.0 pound weights and did 3 sets of 12 reps for everything.

  • Crunches
  • Scissor kicks
  • Biceps curls
  • Triceps extensions
  • Oblique side bends
  • Squats

Definitely not the most well-rounded routine, but it felt like enough!

Before heading back to my dog-sitting gig, I went back to my house for awhile to grab a few things and make a huge smoothie.  I wanted something icy cold like crazy!  I used a banana, 1 cup frozen mixed berries, a ton of spinach, a scoop of vanilla SunWarrior, and 1 tablespoon vanilla extract.

I threw it in the freezer for a few minutes before drinking and it added an extra little coldness!  It completely hit the spot!
