long run tummy trauma.

Once I got home from dinner last night, I was super cool and did…wait for it…

…my taxes!  Not the most exciting Friday evening task, but it was on my to do list for the weekend and it felt good to have that out of the way.  Plus, getting money back is always a happy thing!

Last night I decided to turn my alarm off and just wake up whenever it happened.  Apparently I really needed sleep because it was about noon by the time I got out of bed!  I have a love/hate relationship with sleeping in that late…I love sleep, so it’s nice to “catch up” (even though some say that catching up on your sleep isn’t possible…), but I hate that feeling like I let so many hours of the day slip away!

Once I got up and moving around, I made a quality breakfast since I knew a long run was in order later.  A yogurt mess with vanilla Chobani, rolled oats, a spoonful of peanut butter, chia seeds, and an apple.  So good, so filling, so wonderful!

I curled back up to let it digest and watched the first bit of Burlesque.  I wanted to see it in theaters, but never got around to it!  Divas like Cher and Christina in one film, plus Kristen Bell who I am a huge fan of?  Yes, please!

I got sucked in really quickly and didn’t want to go run – but I did.  10.0 miles, here we got!  It was the last long run before the National Half in TWO WEEKS!!!  Holy crap.

I switched a bit between the track and the treadmill:  5.5 on the track, 2 on the treadmill, then finished up back on the track.  I forgot to bring Gu (or anything to fuel up with) so I was especially grateful for the large breakfast to carry my through!  Regardless, the last couple miles were rough!  I walked a good majority of that part, but I was determined to make it through the whole 10.0 and that is what I did!  I finished up in 1:57:11 (11:43 pace), which is a bit slower than I was hoping for, but I’ll take it!

What I won’t take is this whole getting nauseous after long runs – last week was the first time it’s happened, and it hit again this week!  I think I’m drinking too much water throughout the miles, but I don’t know if that’s really the problem.  Both times, it hit within 20 or so minutes of when I stop running, even though my stomach doesn’t bother me at all during the entire run.  This is definitely a new issue and I am not a fan!  I’ve got a marathon to train for next, my body needs to start cooperating!

Once I got home, I took it easy for awhile to let my stomach settle a bit more.  I finished up the movie, then eventually made a smoothie with a banana, raspberries, blackberries, peaches, almond milk, and protein powder.

And I’ve munched on cinnamon roasted almonds throughout the course of the evening.

Perhaps not enough food after a 10.0 mile run?  Probably not but I was really not sure how much stomach was going to react.  The getting sick this time was a lot nastier than last time around, so I’m trying to be a bit sensitive to the belly.

I’m totally ready to chill the rest of the evening and go to bed early (says the girl who slept until noon…)!

Any brilliant ideas for what might be causing my long run tummy trauma?

I always get nauseated after long runs if I don’t eat enough during/after my run. It is hard to get food down when I’m feeling sick, but once I do, I start to feel better within a few minutes.

I would guess fueling as well. You might need to fuel more during your longer runs…. Gu’s and or a drink sch as Gatorade.
When I train for my longer runs. ( 8 or more miles) I eat breakfast 1.5 – 2 hours before I run ( oats, fruit and some protein).
15 minutes before I run I take a GU or 4-6 oz. of Gatorde. I then take Gu or Gatorade every 35-45 minutes after that….. Hope that helps. 🙂 Good luck on your half!
