in Running and Training

Minus the Christmas Eve service, this morning was the first time I’ve been to church in probably six weeks, if not more.  I definitely contemplated going back to bed.  Okay, I sort of did because I went to the 11am service rather than my usual 9am.  But, I wanted to get the year off on the right foot with my faith so I needed to go.  I’m glad I did; it was a great message.

breakfast.

As I was getting ready, I grabbed a sample size box of Kashi Heart to Heart Warm Cinnamon cereal.  I hadn’t tried this particular kind of Kashi before and I absolutely loved it!  The cereal had a nice crunch and flavor, plus some of the pieces were little hearts which I found particularly endearing.  I’ll definitely eat it again, which is good because a couple weeks ago, I accidentally bought a full size box rather than the GoLean Crunch I usually buy.

After church, I ran to Target to pick up part of a Christmas gift (yep, still doing the Christmas thing!) and to Meijer for some Chobani.  I left both stores with much more than I planned on.  Isn’t that how it always works (especially at Target)?

lunch.

By the time I got home, I was crazy hungry!  Since it’s only the second day of the Eat In Month challenge, I bought the necessary ingredients for homemade pizza rather than ordering one.  I scoured my produce for topping and used zucchini, summer squash, tomato, and mushroom.

Doesn’t it look so pretty?  I very intentionally went light on the cheese.  I baked it for the time it said on the package for the crust, but it could have used a little longer.  It was still just what hit the spot though!

I had 1/4 of the pizza for lunch today.  I’m going to freeze 1/2 for later and the other 1/4 for leftovers later in the week!

After lunch, I almost didn’t go workout, but forced talked myself into it.  As always, I’m glad I went.  I had a 2 mile run and yoga on my training plan for today, but since I went to the later service at church, by the time I got back home, class was just starting.  I ended up running 2.5 miles in 28:05.  I keep getting side cramps when I run lately and I don’t know what I should do to not get them.

Any cures for the nasty side cramps?

Great job getting yourself to church AND to the gym 🙂 way to be lady.

I JUST read about side cramps last night: [I AM NOT AN EXPERT: this is a summary of what I read from David Tiefenthaler]

-a side stitch is really muscle pain in your diaphragm, the muscle located directly under your lungs. When you are running and breathing hard, the muscle gets bounced around more often than normal. The stress this causes the muscle and the ligaments holding it in place cause the pain.

Some suggestions to prevent this pain:

1)work into running more slowly (increase your distance/speed by less of an amount than you have been) I know most running plans saying dont increase by more than 10% distance, but we need to remember that all of our bodies are different and adjust differently – you may want to consider taking more time to increase distance or speed.

2) Core work. The stronger your core, the less likely you are to have these pains/the less severe.

3) If you get the pain during a run, try what some people call “belly breathing” – which basically means exhaling on the opposite foot as where the pain is, deeply. So if your right side hurts, make your exhaule when you are on your left foot in the run. Try taking in breath for 4 counts and exhauling for 4 counts. You may want to slow your pace a bit to do this.
