it’s just not in the cards.

It’s official.  The marathon just isn’t in the cards for me.

Not this year, anyhow.

As much as I wanted to run it, my knee is still pretty iffy.  I had thought the half marathon might still be an option, but I question how smart even that would be.  If I drop down, it will be a lot of walking the day of.

In all reality, I’m going to do a 5k on Sunday and then I think I’m actually going to take some time off from running completely.  I keep pushing the running and never really letting things heal the way they need to.

I want to call myself a marathoner and someday I truly believe I will.  This just isn’t the year it’s going to happen.  And, that’s completely okay!  I’d rather not do it this year and have many more years of running ahead of me, than try it now and do permanent damage.

In the meantime, I’m going to work hard to keep my body in shape.  I’m going to do all those things that I always say I want to do and never do.  Those things that I have a tendency to half-ass and only really do when the mood strikes.

Getting serious about strength training.  More yoga.  Getting back to Zumba.  Hitting up the pool.  Spending time with things that are lower-impact on the knee like the bike and the elliptical.  Trying new classes at the Y.

Just because I’m not accomplishing my marathon goal this year doesn’t make me any less of an athlete.  In fact, I could never run the marathon and I’d still be an athlete.  I’d still be a healthy living blogger.  I’d still be proud of all the things I have accomplished.

No, scratch that.  I am still so very proud of how far I’ve come.  Whatever happens in the future can’t take that away from me.

I know you can rock that marathon someday, whether it be next year or 5 years or even 10 years from now. I think taking some time to heal is great though. What fun is training if you’re constantly worrying about how much you hurt and how serious the hurting is? I’m excited to read about whatever fitness adventures you tackle in the meantime though! 🙂

I’m sorry you aren’t going to be able to do the 1/2 or the full this year, but taking some time off is probably a smart move. Also, you definitely should be proud of all you’ve accomplished!

Kudos on listening to your body! I agree that it’s much better to listen to your body now and delay the marathon instead of permanently injuring yourself. I’m sure one day you will be a marathoner and you should be proud of where you’ve come. If you ever get bored on the elliptical (I know I do), has several good elliptical workouts that help prevent boredom. Good luck!
