The Deal I Made with Lewis Howes

in Goals and Challenges,Weight Loss

I put my money where my mouth is when it comes to my weight loss efforts this week. While I was running on Monday, I listened to a recent episode of The School of Greatness. Lewis Howes was interviewing a pastor named John Gray, and one of the topics that came up was how John is trying to lose weight. Lewis pushed him further on the topic and soon enough, they made a deal to give John some accountability. He’ll be at his goal weight one year from the date of the interview. If not, he’ll donate something like $10,000 to charity.

This got me thinking. I’ve talked for over ten years now about reaching my goal weight. When I started this journey at 233 pounds, I set a goal to lose a total of 100 pounds. In part, it seemed like this really insane accomplishment, but it also put me right in the middle of a “healthy” weight range. BMI is a bit of a joke, but at the time, it gave me some framework. Since September 2006, my goal weight has been 133 pounds. The closest I’ve seen thus far was 148, and that was in 2009.

I desperately want to reach this goal and I know I can. I just somehow seem to lose willpower and focus once I really start getting momentum. It seems silly, no? I start to see the numbers I want and that’s when I lose focus? But, it’s the reality.

At last year’s Summit of Greatness, we had the opportunity to write our vision for 2017. I wrote, without hesitation, that I would be at my goal weight by next year’s Summit. At that point, I had more than forty pounds to lose.

I didn’t really make much progress for the remainder of 2016, but so far, so good this year! I’m currently hovering around 20 pounds lost since the first of the year, and I’m feeling really great. But, I know I could feel greater and that’s kept me motivated.

But, I know myself well enough to know that this is also right around the point where I motivation starts to fail me. When I listed to Lewis challenge to John, it immediately got me thinking about my own goals, about the vision I wrote, and how after all these years, I just want to see that number on the scale. How I know that I can see that number, if only I stay really focused.

After thinking about it for a day, I bit the bullet.

I made my goals public for some serious accountability and put a financial stake it it. In a Facebook group for the 2017 Summit, I shared my vision. I will be at my goal weight (133 pounds) by the morning I leave for Summit in mid-September. If not, it’s $250 to Pencils of Promise, a charity in which Lewis is actively involved. Let’s be honest. I really don’t have $250 lying around to throw at Pencils of Promise (or any charity, for that matter). So, this feels huge. For the first time in a really long time, though, I feel like I can and will achieve my goal.

And, for the days I want to throw in the towel, I can remember this goal. I can turn to my amazing Summit family in the Facebook group who reached out and asked how they could support me in my goals. I can know that I’m doing this for me and that my visions and goals are worth putting in the work.
