coast guard festival 2011.

Friday morning, I got up and headed back to my hometown for some quality family time at the annual Coast Guard Festival.  It’s something I’ve gone to every year since I can remember (minus the summer I lived in California).

My sister, Nicki, and her family came up for Saturday’s events, joining my mom and me.  I only wish my other sister, Kris, and her family could have made it too.  Kris and her two girls did join in for the arts and craft show on Friday, so that was fun!

The kids loved the carnival!  They had so much fun on the kiddie  roller coaster than they rode it twice!

Can you see the family resemblance between my mom, me, and Nicki?

The Festival is capped off with what is always an epic fireworks display.  This year was no exception!

And of course, lots and lots and lots of junk food.  We’re talking fudge, ice cream, elephant ears, candy, soda…and the list goes on.

So.

Much.

Food.

I’m glad I only eat like that one a year, although a few years ago before my weight loss and healthy living journey started, I wouldn’t have thought twice about eating all of it because it was part and parcel with how I ate all the time.  Okay, maybe not to that extreme, but it is amazing to have weekends like this and realize just how much my lifestyle has changed.

I was really excited to get back to some semblance of regular eating habits.  I went grocery shopping for the first time in a couple weeks last night and restocked my kitchen.

I was home by early evening and relaxed with a movie.  Have you seen The Adjustment Bureau yet?  It’s with Matt Damon and Emily Blunt; the premise questions if we control our destiny/life or if there are outside forces adjusting our path to a predetermined future.  David Norris (Damon) is a politician who meets aspiring ballet dancer Elise Sellas (Blunt), and over the course of the first part of the movie, their paths cross a few times.  The outside forces (aka The Adjustment Bureau) is working  to keep them apart, and Norris has to decide if he’s willing to sacrifice the future planned for him for love.  It was a pretty good movie.  Plus, Matt Damon isn’t too bad to watch for a couple hours either!  😉

Let me tell you, I was over the moon excited to have Chobani back in my life after vegan month!  Topped with some Bear  Naked granola and blackberries, it was a great foray back into healthy food!

I opened up a bottle of Trader Joe’s Island Soyaki Sauce last night to make some stir-fry for the week.  I’ve seen other bloggers rave about this stuff and now I know why!  It’s ridiculously good and a nice change of pace from standard teriyaki sauce.  I sauteed tofu along with red and green peppers in the sauce, adding in some pineapple at the very end, and added some brown rice.

I am super excited for these leftovers!  Holy yum.

I was really expecting today to be rough after such a great weekend, but I’ve been pleasantly surprised thus far!  I even woke up well before my alarm (and that’s a rare feat of nature all on it’s own!).  I’m hoping the rest of the week goes just as well!

What was the highlight of your weekend?  Anything fun and exciting?

What a fun weekend! We almost headed over to CGF but then changed our minds.

This makes me miss Grand Haven – I recognize all those stores in the pictures. I found out it was Coast Guard weekend and then realized why my parents decided to spend the week/weekend in the U.P. : )

Haha your parents are smart! 😉 Coming back for CG always reminds me that I do actually love it there; still glad I don’t actually LIVE there anymore though!
