Chicago Marathon Training: Week 8

If last week was simply a matter of getting back in the groove after a week off, this week’s priority was getting back where I need to be if I want to cross that finish line on October 8. Yet, in reality, I am just stuck. Mentally, physically, I just can’t get past about five miles. I know that there is a part of this whole process that needs to be all “suck it up, buttercup” and just do it. I’ve got a lot of thoughts on this for another post. The short version is that I just don’t want to. And, I think that’s okay. But, more on that is on deck.

In the meantime, here’s what happened this week…

Monday: ran 4.0 miles (10:54 pace) and a 6 minute ab circuit. After struggling with my pace last week, this felt significant. While it’s not anywhere near where I’d like to be, anything that feels like progress is encouraging.

Tuesday: yoga (60 minutes) and ran 3.1 (11:40 pace). I spent so much time on my yoga mat in June and I miss it. I need to make it a priority again.

Wednesday: rest day.

Thursday: ran 1.0 (9:58 pace). I had grand plans to get some miles in before the Race the Sun event, but I fell asleep for almost two hours after work and just ran out of time. Granted, I could have done a couple more miles after instead of going for drinks with the fellow runners, but I didn’t. I also ran a sub-10 mile for the first time in a long time, so I’m still calling it an overall win.

Friday: ran 3.0 (10:29 pace). I had to work hard for this, but throwing in some sprints and just trying to go fast was fun.

Saturday: ran 3 (10:21 pace). I was overjoyed about this run. It was speedy (for me, of late) and more importantly, I didn’t want to die. While my distance may not be improving, it’s really encouraging to see glimpses of my paces coming back.

Chicago Marathon Training: Week 8

Sunday: unsure. I went to the gym and didn’t keep track of exactly what I did. I ran around 3.5 miles and did 7-8 minutes on the stair climber. Honestly, I couldn’t get more specific than that. It was a nice change of pace to just go and do something without really worrying about what I did, how long I did it, and all the other details.

I’m stuck at 1.5 miles. It doesn’t help that I’m running right out the work door, which means downhill and uphill, hopefully I’ll get some time for some flat area running to feel a little better. Also, rumor is it will be chilly here on Thursday and I cannot wait.

Hills and heat are a brutal combination! I love love love summer, but the heat does make it hard to be a runner. Keep working, girl.
