britney spears: the femme fatale.

in Grand Rapids

I have been a Britney Spears fan since …Baby One More Time was released as her first single.  I tried to imitate the dances in her videos, whenever she was on a magazine cover I bought it, and my very large collection of Britney memorabilia is still at my mom’s house.  Even in the rougher days (you know, the shaving her head, rehab, etc), I stood by her.

All that being said, when her tour date in Grand Rapids was announced, I had to be there.  My brother-in-law, Eric, still says that he lost part of his hearing when he and Nicki took me to see her at the Van Andel Arena the last time she had a show there, circa 1999.  I figured it was a pretty safe bet he wouldn’t jump at the chance to go again!  😉

Instead, Jacqueline came with me!

The opening acts were Destinee and Paris (haven’t heard of them? Yep, you’re not missing too much) and DJ Pauly D of Jersey Shore fame.  I think the latter would have been much more exciting had I actually ever seen an episode of the show.  In all honesty, he’s actually a pretty legit DJ, his set just went on a little too long.

After Pauly D’s set, there was a 45 minute break, but finally…

It’s Britney, bitch!

Over the course of 90 minutes, Britney showed once again that she is an entertainer.  It was an incredible stage show with the props, the dancing (she had something like a dozen amazing dancers), the stage set changes, the lights, the smoke.  Truly the whole package.  I think there were a few points she was actually singing and not just relying on lip-synching.

She performed the vast majority of her latest album, Femme Fatale, but much to my disappointment she neglected a lot of her earliest songs.  There was only a small snippet of “…Baby One More Time” and no “Oops I Did It Again”.

Although I had a lot of fun and fully believe Britney is still an amazing performer…there was just something missing.  It felt like she was just going through the motions.  There was no spark, no passion.  It wasn’t her A game at all.  I don’t know if she was just having an off night (which I hope is the case) or if she’s just over it, but the “it’s Britney, bitch” attitude just wasn’t there at all.

None the less, if Britney ever has a tour come through Grand Rapids again, I’d definitely go.  I’ve been a fan through so much craziness, it’s going to take more than one less than stellar show to change that!
