be the match.

This afternoon, I registered with the National Marrow Donor Program!

It’s something I had thought about before, but always heard that the actual donation process if I were selected hurts like crazy and that scared me off for the longest time.  But, there was a registration drive at work today, so I got over my fear and signed up.  If my few days of pain can save a life, that’s pretty cool.

Did you know that every year 10,000 people need a marrow transplant, but only about half will get one?

Anyone between the ages of 18 and 61 can register to be a donor.  The odds of being a match are about 1 in 540 and even if selected, a donor is not obligated to actually go through with the process.  I think if I were actually selected, I’d feel so guilty if I backed out!  The actual process for joining the registry was very simple, just taking four swabs of my cheek cells.  The whole process, including filling out paperwork, took ten minutes at most.

(I was trying to be sassy, I think I just look totally bummed out in that picture! Oops!)

I munched on the Love Grown Foods granola that Tina hooked me up with at the Healthy Living Summit.  I need to order some online since it’s not in any stores around Grand Rapids.  It’s so tasty!

I totally bailed on the gym tonight.  It was so beautiful out (still in the high 70s/low 80s!!) and I just couldn’t stand the idea of being cooped up inside even longer!  Instead, I grabbed Dexter and took him for another long walk.  He loved it, I got some exercise.  Win/win.

I kept dinner simple tonight.  I had a ton of spinach to use up and wilting it to put in pasta is such an easy solution!  I threw a TON of sauce in, some nutritional yeast, and a bit of parmesan cheese.  Pair it up with some garlic toast and a glass of red wine, you’ve got a solid meal all around.

I was feeling all sorts of unmotivated to make anything for my office potluck tomorrow.  Chips and salsa always go over well, so I completely copped out and went that route.  I was going to get some potato salad from the deli but it turns out a pound of potato salad?  Not actually that much and I didn’t want to pay an arm and a leg to buy enough.  Lazy pants McGee, right here.

Since I didn’t have to worry about making food, I’m spending the evening working on thank you notes for the gifts I received at the family dinner last weekend.  I am absolutely terrible about sending thank yous, so I’m trying to get better.

Plus, it’s a hugely important game for the Tigers tonight!  If they don’t win this, they’re done for the season!  I’ve got my fingers (and toes!) crossed they can get a WIN!

Are you registered as a donor for anything?  I’m also registered as an organ donor if it were to come to that.

CUTE HAIR ALERT!!! Seriously I love it.

I’m not a bone marrow donor but am an organ donor. I think I should sign up to be a BM donor– it’s in my field of immunology!

I’m an organ donor. We have a young boy in our community with ALL and we will be registering to be bone marrow donors too.

Don’t be scared of any pain if selected. Most of the donations these days are done through PBSC which is just like a long blood donation. The only pain is from the shots to increase your stem cell production which makes your bones ache a bit, but ony for a couple days. Any discomfort is far outweighed by the benefits of helping someone else!

That’s what I keep reminding myself, if it could save a life, that’s worth it! 🙂

You go girl! I know that I would pass out if I ever signed up give marrow (I can’t even get shots without passing out), but I am an organ donor. Love the quick & easy pasta dish; those really are the best :).

Oh I’m that way when they have to draw blood – so if I ever get called for marrow donation, it could be interesting!

Wow well done you, I think that’s a really great thing to do!
I’m an organ donor and I really want to give blood one day but I’m not allowed as I’m still “under investigation”.
Love the look of your pasta, I like to add spinach or rocket to my pasta dishes for the extra green too 🙂

Yay for organ donors! I’m always scared to try donating blood – I pass out when they just have to draw a little for lab tests (who knows what will happen if I ever get called to donate marrow!).

Did you know I’ve been on the donor list since the mid-90’s? And here I am trying not to sound old…
