bayshore 10k 2011.

in Running and Training

Already this month, I’ve run two races:  the Tulip Time 10k and the River Bank Run 25k; this morning marked May’s third and final run:  the Bayshore 10k in Traverse City, Michigan.

I was up a little before 6 am to start getting ready; I had planned on a little earlier than that, but it just didn’t happen.  I made what has become my standard pre-race/long run fuel:  toast with sunflower seed butter; today I topped it with white chocolate chips.

By the time we got into town last night, the packet pick up had closed down already, so I grabbed that this morning while also enjoying a break from the cold drizzle that was coming down…and have a photo op!

The starting line was just mass chaos; everyone of all different paces were all bunched together.  For the first half mile or so, I would go from a steady pace to what felt like a screeching halt to having to pass a bunch of people.  Once everyone found their rhythm, it was a lot easier to keep a steady pace.  Fortunately by this time, the rain had let up as well.

It was an out and back course running almost entirely along the water which made for some great scenery!  It would have been even more stunning had it not been so overcast!  I’m not sure how I feel about doing the out and back on race day.  I was around mile 2.0 when I saw the lead runner making his way back!  I couldn’t decide if that was really motivating to go faster or discouraging that he was twice as far as I was!  I kept it positive and went with the motivation!

The first half of the course, I was feeling really good.  I felt strong and fast, far more than I anticipated I would.  By the 5k mark, I was just around 32:00, which I was more than happy with.  Then things quickly started going downhill.  Although it wasn’t the one I’ve been having problems with as of late, my knee started locking up.  I walked when I needed to, ran when I could, and stopped to stretch a few times, hoping that would get the kinks out.

My pace steadily decreased over the last half, but I did as best as I could, determined to make it to the end.  Just before the 6.0 mile marker, I could hear the crowds cheering at the finish line and I knew the end was in sight!  I used everything I had in me and just started booking it to the finish line.

It felt awesome to finish so strong!

  • Mile 1: 10:29
  • Mile 2: 9:59
  • Mile 3: 10:48
  • Mile 4: 12:49
  • Mile 5: 13:53
  • Mile 6: 14:22
  • Mile 0.23:  2:04

I finished with a chip time of 1:14:22 (1:14:27, Garmin time) which was about 5 minutes slower than I was hoping for, but a finish is still a finish and for that much, I’m proud of what I accomplished!  I placed 1518 out of 1901 which was actually a lot better than I anticipated!

My playlist was almost entirely pop music.  When I was putting it together, I really just wanted music I could have fun with and I’m so glad because it was a great distraction when my knee was really hurting near the end!

Another race, in the books!  As I start training for the marathon, I plan to play around with knee braces and other options to hopefully get that under control!  I’m really over having it hurt so bad by the end of a race!
