bartertown diner.

in Grand Rapids

I think I have a new favorite place in Grand Rapids:  the Bartertown Diner and Roc’s Cupcakes. Updated:  the awesome cupcakes are no longer at Bartertown; they now serve a more varied dessert selection.

It’s a vegetarian/vegan/raw restaurant coupled with a vegan cupcake bakery.  A little piece of delicious heaven right in the heart of downtown G-Rap.  What I truly love about this place, though, is that it’s entirely owned and operated by the people working behind the scenes.  No owners in the standard sense of the word.  From their website:

Bartertown will also be without bosses and managers. We are worker run, and this means anybody working at Bartertown will be suited to help you in any way possible. We want to create a sustainable working environment for all of us. We believe in collectively working as one to create the best possible restaurant for us and you.

Very cool.

The decor was very hipster, very fun.  It’s a small restaurant with only about half a dozen tables.  We arrived right when doors opened for dinner, so we didn’t have to wait, but I have heard of a couple people who had a short wait.

I had The Michigander (since I’m smitten with the mitten and all, it seemed appropriate!  😉 which is “buffalo and ranch infused tofu, with fresh basil pistou and three different cheeses from three different Michigan farms. Comes on sourdough bread, with a side of spicy vegan ranch for dipping”.

I’ll be honest and say that somehow I totally missed the fact that it’s real cheese in the sandwich.  I think I saw the vegan ranch and in my mind, I thought it was an entirely vegan sandwich.  Oops!  It would be nice if they specified on the menu what meals fit under which category (vegan vs veg vs raw).

Vegan fail aside, the sandwich was delicious!  The ranch had a bit of a kick to it which I think really added to the sandwich as a whole.

For dessert, I went with the red velvet cupcake which I could not even tell was vegan!  So good!  The cupcake itself was just a tid bit dry, but that didn’t stop it from being so tasty!  Plus, the melt-in-your-mouth frosting more than made up for it.

The prices were also extremely reasonable; my bill came to $11.13.

I loved my experience at Bartertown and can’t wait to try the rest of their menu because it all sounded heavenly!

Oh my YUM! I am definitely going to be checking this place out. We love Stella’s for veggie/vegan fare, as well as Brick Road Pizza. So good.
