back to goal-setting.

I like to fancy myself an ambitious, goal oriented person.  I have a lot I want to accomplish in my life and most often, goal setting naturally comes hand in hand with that.  My problem, though, lies in the fact that I’m sometimes too ambitious and set more goals than what a reasonable person should take on.

Exhibit A:  during my last semester and a half of grad school, I was taking a full course load and learning my new 40 hour a week job.  Exit, sane Mindy. Enter, crazy, stressed out Mindy.  I graduated, but it was a rough road to the end.

Exhibit B:  my 2011 goals.  I couldn’t tell you the last time I thought about them, to be honest.  I wrote 13 goals.  I’ve (mostly unintentionally) stayed on track with of them.

Exhibit C:  my 28 while 28 goals.  Okay, so far I’m actually doing pretty okay with these.  Then again, it’s less than a month in.

So, as you can see, I have a tendency to take on a lot in my life.  Not such a bad thing, but when I bite off more than I can chew, it almost seems to defeat the purpose.

I went back and forth on a new approach to goal setting – weekly or monthly?  One or multiple?  I had a phase where I was doing monthly goals and did okay with that.  In retrospect, it was largely the same problem with too much to focus on because I would think up several goals that were probably too much to handle in the course of a month.

Today, it’s back to monthly goals.  They say it takes 21 or 28 days to make (or break) a habit, so I like the idea of a month.  Healthy habits are good.  But rather than several hard-to-reach goals, I’m going to focus on a couple challenging, I’ll have to work for it, but it still feels attainable if I try hard kind of goals.

[October goals.]

Drink at least 64 ounces of water a  day.  I have been soda free since  September 6 (!!!) but still severely lacking in the amount of water I drink each day.  I think I’ve actually been drinking less since I cut out the Diet Coke.

Exercise at least 4 times a week.  Another thing I’ve been slacking on lately.  Since I’m not running, I sometimes feel a bit lost when it comes to exercise.  I have to remember that running is not (and should not be) my only form of exercise.  When I gave up running, I even said I was excited to use this time to be more dedicated to cross training.  I started out strong in September, but slowly faded.

My hope is that by only focusing on a couple things each month, I won’t feel defeated a couple weeks in, but that I can work hard and actually reach my goals.

I even made a handy-dandy little calendar on Google Docs to keep track of my daily progress.

And on that note, I’m off to go drink some water and plan my workouts for the week…

I like the calendar idea! Are there any fun classes at the gym you could do for your cardio?
