an “ah-ha” moment.

I had an “ah-ha” moment this week:  yesterday, I was so tempted to go back for second cupcake.  They tasted so good and my sweet tooth was going nuts.  More sugar, more sugar, more sugar.

All of a sudden I had a revelation:  this is why you’re not losing the weight you want to.  Okay, so it wasn’t a true revelation.  I fully understand how weight loss works – I’m down 70+ pounds from where I was 5 years ago!  But, having gotten to a more comfortable weight, I slowly let old habits creep back in to my life.  In the little over a year since I’ve started blogging, I’ve done nothing but fluctuate in the same 10ish pound range.  Up for awhile, then the numbers go back down, then slowly creep up again.

I completely believe in allowing myself treats.  Depriving myself of a cupcake isn’t going to help me in the long run because I know one day I’ll snap and eat my weight in junky, sugary, processed food.  Having one cupcake is totally acceptable.  But the food like that, day after day is what keeps me from reaching my goal.  But yesterday, it wasn’t just one cupcake.  I had a latte in the morning, a cupcake in the afternoon, and really struggled to not get that second cupcake. It truly is all about moderation.

So maybe it’s not the greatest “ah-ha” moment I’ve ever had, but it was enough of one for this season in my life to (hopefully) push through this weight roller coaster and allow me to get where I want to be.

All that being said, I did something this morning I haven’t done in awhile:  my only breakfast was a coffee drink from Starbucks.  Counterproductive, I know.

It used to be such a habit and I know it’s not a good one, so I’ve done really well at having some kind of real food with it.  Today was another story.  Bring on the iced caramel macchiato.  That’s all I needed wanted.

The late night due to the Glee concert on Monday plus not being able to fall asleep last night all hit me hard this morning.  I felt like a walking zombie!  The coffee did the trick and kept me surprisingly full through the morning.

In an effort to live by yesterday’s realization, I’m avoiding the ice cream social in my building like the plague.  I had my sugar-laden coffee drink this morning.  That’s enough for one day.  Turning down ice cream?  Crazy hard.  In the long run, it’s worth the sacrifice.  When I see that goal weight on the scale somewhere down the road, I won’t even remember that day I skipped the ice cream social.

I was apparently in a green mood when I was packing my lunch today with both cucumbers and grapes!  I ate the cucumbers with some spinach artichoke hummus.

Paired with a container of lemon Chobani.  I would say it’s my favorite flavor, but I say that about pomegranate as well, so we’ll call it a tie.
